Kkaennip (aka perilla leaf)

Here's the perilla plant, or deulkkae, in my parents' garden.

This stuff is great. It has a strong vegetal taste that is somewhat minty and anise-y. Wikipedia describes it well.

The leaf is called kkaennip. When fresh, I will usually eat it in ssam, using it to wrap rice, meat, and some condiment.

Pickled kkaennip is one of my favorite Korean foods. My mom makes this on her own, but you can get it at any Korean market.
